Our featured apple of the week is the Fuji. Its sweet flavor offers hints of honey and citrus and its crisp and juicy texture is ideal for snacking. Fuji apples have a crisp cream colored flesh and its skin has a characteristically dark pink blush or speckled pattern over a yellow-green background. We agree they are one of the prettiest apples we offer at Rose Hill Farm.
Fuji apples were developed in the late 1930s by growers at the Tohoku Research Station in Fujisaki, Japan, and they were named after Mount Fuji. However, Fuji are actually a cross of two American parents, the Red Delicious and the Ralls Janet, an antique apple that goes back to the days of Thomas Jefferson. Fuji apples were introduced to the United States in the 1960s and have since been one of the most popular varieties.
The Fuji is a late season apple that keeps extremely well (3+ months) when refrigerated and we think tastes most refreshing when chilled. So if you have the space in your crisper drawer, stock up on Fugi apples now and enjoy them well into the winter. In addition to Fuji, we are currently picking Fortune, Mutsu, Shizuka, Empire, Golden Delicious and Jonagold apples as well as pumpkins.
